Let’s Do Plastic Canvas!

When I was a kid, I used to go visit my Aunt Nettie (technically my Great Aunt Nettie) with my Mom. She would make me my favorite kind of Jell-O and ham sandwiches and my Mom would insist that I be polite and not laugh at anything that Aunt Nettie said or did, and then she would be the one to crack up as soon as Nettie’s back was turned! My Aunt Nettie loved to craft, and her house was filled to the brim with embroidered and crocheted and sewn and painted objects (some by her, others by my Great Grandma and other members of the family), but my favorites were made out of plastic canvas.

Aunt Nettie and me in her house when I was around 8

Aunt Nettie had plastic canvas tissue holders, plastic canvas toilet roll covers, and even a plastic canvas denture case. I was so fascinated by them, and she was so excited by my excitement, that she would mail me pre-cut pieces of plastic canvas so I could make my own little projects. Plastic Canvas projects seem to have fallen out of favor over the years because I guess they feel old lady-ish. But, what’s wrong with old ladies? They have the best stuff! You’re telling me you wouldn’t happily give up your tiny little apartment to live in the Golden Girls’ Miami house? Girl, please.

Some plastic canvas projects I made using kits or purchased patterns

Despite my penchant for objets d’art that look like they were discovered in a creepy antique store during a road trip, I also like them to look updated for the pop culture, kitsch, and nerdiness of my world. So, please take a look at the patterns I’ve created here. And in the meantime, you can learn the basics by checking out my video tutorial, downloading my pdf tutorial, or checking out this post that walks you through everything you need to know!
